Buying Guide

Choosing a signet ring

A signet ring is the one piece of men's jewellery that was originally a tool. The flat top was pressed into hot wax to sign a letter, and forging someone else's seal was a serious crime. The gummed envelope killed the function in the nineteenth century, but the shape survived, and it is now the most personal ring most men will ever own.

This guide covers what actually decides a good purchase in the Netherlands: bezel shape, engraving or no engraving, which finger, which material, and how to get the size right the first time. Disclosure up front: we run Monrich, so read the brand section knowing that. Everything about other brands here comes from their own published pages.

As a visual reference while you read, the signet ring collection shows the shapes described below.

Section 01

Bezel shapes

The bezel is the flat top, and its shape sets the register of the whole ring before any other decision.

  • Oval: the traditional one. Built for crests, initials and intaglio engraving, and it reads correctly in every setting from a suit to a t-shirt.
  • Square or rectangular: more contemporary. Works well with bold engraving, and just as well with none at all.
  • Round: often used for monograms and circular symbols. Less common, still classic.
  • Cushion (softened square): the modern middle ground, popular through the current revival.
  • Stone-set: a flat stone instead of a metal face. Reads as a signet from a distance, as jewellery up close.

For a first signet, oval or square are the safest. Both carry engraving well and neither dates quickly.

Section 02

Engraving, or not

Engraving is what turns a ring into your ring, but a bare polished face has become a legitimate choice rather than an unfinished one.

Initials are the most common: one to three letters, serif or sans. A family crest requires documented heraldry and a specialist engraver, and the price reflects the hours. A monogram interlaces two or three letters and is usually drawn to order. A symbol or a date works when the meaning is private, and the inside of the band is the discreet place for it.

On process: hand engraving by a master cuts deepest and lasts longest, laser engraving is precise and far cheaper, and pantograph sits between the two. For a ring worn daily, laser is the normal choice and it holds up. Note that engraved and personalised pieces are almost never returnable, at any brand, so the size has to be right before you commit.

No engraving reads modern and deliberate, and it keeps the ring wearable in contexts where a monogram would feel loud.

Section 03

Which finger

gold signet rings worn on a hand, the classic little finger position

In the Netherlands the finger changes the message more than the ring does.

Little finger (pink). The traditional home of the signet, and still the most common position. No other convention lives there, so a ring on the pink is unmistakably a choice. It reads as heritage and personal style, and it interferes least with daily life.

Index finger (wijsvinger). Historically the position of authority, worn where rank was meant to be seen. Today it reads as confident and modern. It is also the most visible finger when you gesture, so quality shows and shortcuts show faster.

Ring finger (ringvinger). Careful here. In the Netherlands the wedding ring is worn on the right hand in most of the country, with the left hand used in parts of the south and in Catholic families. A signet on your right ring finger can therefore be misread as a wedding band, which is the one signal you may not want to send by accident.

Thumb. Rare, deliberate, and it suits a wide plain band better than an ornate bezel.

The safe default for a first signet: the little finger of your non-dominant hand.

Section 04

Materials, and who declares what

Four constructions cover almost everything sold in the Netherlands, and they age very differently.

Stainless steel, uncoated. Nothing to wear off. The colour is the metal itself, so it survives showers, gyms and years without changing. Its limit is that it only comes in steel tone.

Stainless steel with a gold coating. This is where the gold look lives at a reasonable price, and where the real differences hide. Two rings can look identical on day one and behave completely differently at month twelve, because the process and the thickness of the coating decide how long the colour lasts. The buyer's problem is that most listings say only goldplated or verguld, with no process and no micron figure.

Sterling silver 925. A precious metal with a hallmark, and it can be resized and repaired by any jeweller. It also tarnishes, which is normal and reversible with a polishing cloth, and it scratches more easily than steel.

Solid gold. The heirloom answer, priced accordingly, and the only category where the metal itself holds value.

The useful test when comparing two gold-look rings is simple: does the page tell you the process and the thickness, and is there a written guarantee on the finish? If the answer is no on both, treat it as a fashion purchase rather than a long-term one, whatever the price.

Section 05

Getting the size right

Signet rings are worn on fingers most men have never measured, which is why sizing is where the returns come from.

Dutch ring sizes are usually given as the inner circumference in millimetres, so a size 56 has a 56 mm inside. To measure at home, wrap a strip of paper around the finger where the ring will sit, mark the overlap, and measure the length in millimetres. That number is your size.

Three things to know before ordering. The little finger is the smallest finger, so a ring bought for the ring finger will never fit it. Fingers swell through the day and in warm weather, so measure in the evening rather than first thing. And the dominant hand usually runs about half a size larger than the other.

If you are buying a gift, borrow an existing ring and note which finger it lives on, then use the size guide to convert. Guessing a size and hoping to exchange later does not work on an engraved piece.

Where to buy in the Netherlands

Monrich presentation box, what a written guarantee looks like in practice

Four routes, each genuinely better at something different. Prices are indicative and taken from the brands' own pages at the time of writing.

1. Monrich, for a declared specification

Disclosure: this is us. Our rings are 316L stainless steel with 18K gold PVD, and we publish the coating thickness at 1 to 2 microns on the product page, backed by a written twelve-month guarantee against tarnishing. Rings sit at roughly 50 to 70 euros, and the permanent two-for-one changes the maths if you are buying more than one piece. The honest limits: we have no silver line and no solid gold, our range is deliberately small, and you cannot try one on in a shop before buying. If those matter more than a published spec, one of the next three is a better fit.

2. Lucardi, for trying it on and having it adjusted

The largest signet selection of the four, with 53 signet rings listed and filters for silver, stainless steel and 14 karat gold. The range runs from a recycled stainless steel men's signet at about 40 euros to a 14 karat gold signet with a small diamond at about 750 euros. Their real advantage is physical: shops across the country where you can put the ring on your own hand, compare two bezels side by side, and have a ring resized rather than returned. Worth knowing before you order: their returns window is 14 days, and on the gold-coloured steel pieces the listings say goldplated without stating a process or a thickness.

3. Buddha to Buddha, for heavy recycled silver

The Amsterdam house, and the answer if you want weight and a precious metal rather than a coating. Their pieces are made from recycled 925 sterling silver, with some in gold-plated recycled silver, handmade, and priced from about 59 euros to 699 and above. The collection is genderneutral rather than a dedicated men's line, which in practice means the heavier models read as men's rings and the rest are simply rings. Silver tarnishes and wants an occasional polish, which is the trade for the material.

4. Aramat Jewels, for budget steel, with one caveat

The Utrecht shop works in low-nickel stainless steel, 925 silver and titanium, at roughly 25 to 38 euros, which makes it a sensible budget route for steel jewellery generally and a useful one if nickel is a problem for you. The caveat is specific to this article: signet rings are not part of what they present, so it is a place to know about rather than a signet destination.

Section 07

How to choose

Four questions settle it faster than any comparison table.

Will you wear it every day, or occasionally? Daily wear rewards uncoated steel or a coating with a published thickness. Occasional wear makes the question far less important.

Do you want a precious metal? If a hallmark matters to you, that is silver or gold, and it comes with polishing or with a much higher price. If the look matters more than the metal, coated steel does the job for a fraction.

Engraved or bare? Engraving makes the ring yours and makes it non-returnable. Decide the size first.

Do you need to try it on? If yes, that points to a shop with a counter. If you are comfortable measuring at home, online gives you the published specifications a shop rarely puts on a label.

Whatever you choose, read the finish claim before the price. The full signet ring guide goes deeper on shapes and history, and the Lucardi review covers the retail route in detail.

Frequently asked questions

Which finger should a man wear a signet ring on?

The little finger of the non-dominant hand is the traditional and most versatile position. The index finger is the confident modern choice. Be careful with the right ring finger in the Netherlands, since that is where most Dutch wedding rings are worn.

Are signet rings still in style?

Yes. The category has been growing since the mid 2010s and remains one of the strongest in men's jewellery, driven by heritage and by personalisation.

What size signet ring do I need?

Dutch sizes are the inner circumference in millimetres, so a 56 measures 56 mm inside. Wrap paper around the finger, mark the overlap and measure it. Measure in the evening, and remember the little finger is smaller than the ring finger.

Can a signet ring be resized?

Silver and gold can be resized by a jeweller within a size or two, and some shops do it in store. Stainless steel is much harder to resize, so buying the right size matters more with steel.

Is a coated steel signet ring worth it?

It depends entirely on the coating. A PVD coating with a published thickness and a written guarantee is built to last years of daily wear. A listing that says only goldplated, with no process and no thickness, is a fashion purchase and should be priced as one.
